First full seasonPitt Race and Englishtown, back to back. Learning the car in public.

A black Camaro, a set of worn rears, and a thousand miles of opposite lock — from the wet hills of western Pennsylvania to the far end of the Florida sun.

01 — The hills
It starts
with trees
Western Pennsylvania doesn't give you a straight road. It gives you ridgelines and hollows and two-lane blacktop that bends because the hill said so. You learn the shape of a corner before you ever learn the word for it.
Cold pavement, bare oak, and a sky the colour of an old nickel. That was the whole classroom.
The car came later. The angle came from the road.
02 — The car
Camaro SS
Fifth-gen. Black on black. Heavy in a way the imports aren't, and it argues with you about it — which is exactly the point. Everyone told me to buy something lighter. Nobody remembers a lighter car.

03 — Where it happened
Tyre smoke
and cheap seats
Grassroots drift is a parking lot, a corner worker, and three hundred people who drove four hours to watch strangers go sideways.
Pitt Race
The home track. Season openers, cold mornings, and the ridgeline that shows up in the back of half these photographs.
Raceway Park
Old Bridge Township. The blue wall with the town's name on it, the banked sweeper, and the ClubLoose crowd on the fence.
ClubLoose
The events that made the east coast scene. Tandem until the lights came on, then tandem under the lights.
04 — The paddock
Nobody
does this
alone
The car gets the photographs. The people get the four a.m. loading, the spare driveshaft, the tow home when it doesn't come back on its own wheels.
Jessica has been in more paddocks, more folding chairs and more questionable trackside weather than anyone should reasonably agree to.
Everybody under that canopy has pushed the car at some point. That's the actual sport.
05 — Southbound
A thousand
miles south
Same car. Same angle. Warmer asphalt.
You don't really notice the change until the trees stop being trees you recognise. The oaks give up somewhere in Virginia. By the Georgia line everything is pine, and then the pines go too.
Pennsylvania taught me the corner. Florida just turned the heat up and left the lights on.
Longer season. No frost delay. Tyres that never come up to temperature in February because February isn't a thing here.
Cinco de Mayo openerClubLoose at Pitt Race. The season that stuck.
Night sessionsHeadlights, smoke, and a grid marshal's hand in the dark.
FloridaSame Camaro. Warmer pavement. Longer season.
06 — Sunshine state
Still
sideways
The hills are gone. The habit isn't.
There's a version of this story where the car gets sold, the helmet goes in a closet, and the whole thing becomes something you mention at a barbecue. This isn't that version.
